چکیده

Atomic antihydrogen has recently been observed at Fermilab [1]. It appears feasible to measure the principal structure, ne structure and Lamb shift of antihydrogen atoms in ight [2]. It is possible to test the proposed techniques and measure cross sections for the relevant atomic processes at relativistic velocities by rst using a proton beam. We propose to perform such a test at the FNAL Booster using 8 GeV protons, either in the old transfer line from the Booster to the Main Ring (the proposed \silicon damage" test facility) or in the permanent magnet transfer line to the Main Injector.

In-beam measurement of the hydrogen hyperfine splitting and prospects for antihydrogen spectroscopy

Antihydrogen, the lightest atom consisting purely of antimatter, is an ideal laboratory to study the CPT symmetry by comparison with hydrogen. With respect to absolute precision, transitions within the ground-state hyperfine structure (GS-HFS) are most appealing by virtue of their small energy separation. ASACUSA proposed employing a beam of cold antihydrogen atoms in a Rabi-type experiment, to...

A fast model for prediction of respiratory lung motion for image-guided radiotherapy: A feasibility study

Background: The aim of this work was to study the feasibility of constructing a fast thorax model suitable for simulating lung motion due to respiration using only one CT dataset. Materials and Methods: For each of six patients with different thorax sizes, two sets of CT images were obtained in single-breath-hold inhale and exhale stages in the supine position. The CT images were then ...

Status of the Proton Driver Study at Fermilab

In order to enhance Fermilab hadron research program and to provide a proton source to a future muon storage ring or a muon collider, the study of a new high intensity proton machine called the Proton Driver is being pursued at Fermilab. It would replace the present linac and 8 GeV Booster and produce 20 times the proton intensity as the Booster. This paper gives a status report on a number of ...

Design and Prototype Tests of a Large-aperture 37-53 Mhz Ferrite-tuned Booster Synchrotron Cavity

The Booster synchrotron at Fermilab employs eighteen 37–53 MHz ferrite-tuned double-gap coaxial radiofrequency cavities for acceleration of protons from 400 MeV to 8 GeV. The cavities have an aperture of 2.25 inches and operate at 55 kV per cavity. Future high duty factor operation of the Booster will be problematic due to unavoidable beam loss at the cavities resulting in excessive activation....

Challenges to the Fermilab Linac and Booster Accelerators*

A report on the challenges confronting the Fermilab Linac and Booster accelerators is presented. Plans to face those challenges are discussed. Historically, the Linac/Booster system has served only as an injector for the relatively low repetition rate Main Ring synchrotron. With construction of an 8 GeV target station for the 5 Hz MiniBooNE neutrino beam and requirements for rapid multi-batch i...
